Although I've never lived within the city limits of Mountain Lake, I certainly have spent quite a bit of time there. I had thirteen years of schooling there, went to church there for eighteen years, swam in the lake, perused the cemetary, volunteered at Heritage House, visited my cousins and now frequently visit my mother and sister who live there. I take offense to someone with a made-up name ("mounty laker") calling Mountain Lake a dump. The city is full of wonderfully interesting people, has several thriving businesses, and has a huge asset just in the fact that it has a lake. I especially enjoy walking and biking on the path that borders the lake (even though it's bordered by signs screaming "NO TRESPASSING!" at me) during my visits. The lake is brimming with seasonal wildlife, and is a wonderful place to canoe and ice skate. Even though the population of Mountain Lake has barely grown in the last 50 years, and even though several large businesses have failed, (the hospit

I grew up in Mt. Lake in the 60's and also ran on the track team. I have been gone since graduating in '66 but always have a special place in my heart for my home town. Congratulations to the Cross Country Girls Team! I'm especially proud of Gretchen Wall to whom I'm related. Keep up the great work!!! Jane (Doerksen) Jones

I want to congratulate the team of the wolverine girls. There is a link in my favourites to the Mountain Lake Public School. My son, Rik, was there last year as an exchange student. Mt. Lake is in our hearts and I always look on the page of Observer/Advocate.It's nice to recognize faces on the pictures. I like to read about your community,it meant so much to our son Rik. He is doing well, by the way. Very busy in theatrework.Greetings Eckhardt family in Holland

The referendum is an important part of our future. It makes it possible for our entire community to function. Either way you vote, give consideration to both pros and cons. As for city government, it too plays an important role. All those who want to "improve" this dump should get on the ballot and make it happen.

October is breast cancer awareness month--If you are 35 and have not had a mammogram, now is the time. My sister, Jennifer Gosen, died 07/21/06 at age 40 of metastatic breast cancer diagnosed when she was 38. Don't take your health for granted. Make an appointment to get a mammogram. It might save your life.

I graduated from Mtn. Lake HS in 1980, and have had only rare opportunities to get back since. However, I just got back from my second trip there in 4 months time. It was great to see so many dear people from my past. I think sometimes we underestimate the value of touching base with our roots. I found it very refreshing, even though there is also sadness due to changes in the town, deaths of loved ones, etc. I cherish the memories of my upbringing there.

The all school reunion at Butterfield-Odin was great last weekend!! The memory of the old study hall, as it was in the late 60's and early 70's have really changed. The computer lab is a real plus with keeping up with the times. We had ten from the class of 1971, and would like to hear from any others that didn't make it this year. Lost the manifest from the 30 year reunion. Need names, address, and e-mails for the rest of the class. Please give me a holler, and where you are at now. Trying to get info. for the next gathering. Would love to have the old class together again.Take care, where ever you are.
